This book definitely provided interesting insight into the Victorian mindset - the sincere religious feeling and the resultant extreme anxiety was particularly well portrayed. My problems were mostly with the writing style. A lot of it is written in long, hard to follow sentences or in meandering asides the importance of which aren't immediately evident. Also, I found the first (and longest) sketch of Cardinal Manning to be painfully boring, especially the parts about the Oxford Movement. Maybe if I knew more about Victorian England I'd enjoy it more. The sketch of Florence Nightingale was the highlight of the book, and definitely worth a read.
